Tourism and Linving Heritage PhD Workshop
Call for application: The PhD Workshop Tourism and Living Heritage: Challenges and Perspectives in Europe and Asia will take place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 7 to 14 November 2027.
Bringing together PhD candidates and early-career researchers, the workshop will explore contemporary issues surrounding tourism and living heritage across Europe and Asia.
Applications are open until 30 November 2026.
The workshop will be organised by the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the CEFC with the support of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as part of the Sphinx project .
It will bring together 15 PhD students from European universities and 15 PhD students from the Universities of Hong Kong and mainland China.
The workshop is designed to be interdisciplinary, and will therefore bring together PhD students from all disciplines related to heritage and tourism.
It will feature field workshops, meetings and exchanges with local stakeholders (heritage and tourism managers, museum curators, local associations, researchers, heritage, tourism, and Masters of Intangible Heritage), classroom sessions and field visits.
The duration of the workshop is 7 full days
PhD students will work in small mixed groups.
They will prepare projects to be presented, at the end of the workshop, to an audience of researchers and local stakeholders.
Following the workshop, a two-day visit to China will be organised.
15 grants of €1,500 will be awarded to selected PhD students from European universities.
PhD students will be responsible for any travel or life costs exceeding this amount. However, every effort will be made to ensure that accommodation costs are kept to a minimum.
Accommodation is provided in student halls of residence on the HKUST campus.
Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled at a European university, in the 2nd year of doctoral studies or higher.
Doctoral studies should be thematically related to Cultural Heritage and to the Workshop’s theme.

- Abstract of the doctoral thesis (max. 500 words),
- Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages),
- Letter of introduction from the thesis supervisor or other academic referee (max.300 words),
- A motivation letter presenting the reasons for applying and the expected outcomes.
